A sobering thread. While criticism of pharma industry for issues such as pricing and inappropriate marketing is often justified it is becoming clear that the rigour with which it pursues basic discovery science is putting academia to shame. No lack of imaginative science eitherhttps://twitter.com/Maratosflier/status/1233218536664977408 …

    9. FYI: I had 30 years almost continuous NIH funding, >120 pubs, h-index 59, >18000 citations. Did not leave academia cause I failed. Left because hype/dishonesty became tiresome.

The worrying thing is: there is no 'reward system' to test reproducibility or publish null/negative results. I've seen too many desk-rejections based on 'effect size too small/null' - and especially for ECRs, going against established results is difficult.

It takes commitment to science. I’d rather focus on valid science than @nature stories so I could swan about MIT or Oxford @ceclindgren @VamsiMootha https://doi.org/10.1093/nar/gky570 … vs https://doi.org/10.1038/ng1180  Maybe they should move over & give me their privileged (public!!) resources? 😉

Lots of examples. Mootha et 2003 OXPHOS n=18 IR/T2DM. Data excluded, Stats model ‘incomplete’, post insulin clamp biopsies not declared. >5,000 citations!! I’ve spent >10y showing irreproducible (n>700 samples). A case of career momentum built on fraud @VamsiMootha @ceclindgren

Absolutely correct!! Check-out for instance the work of an inspiring role model for me here, as a Project Leader in R&D who - like him - was a PI in academia for 2 decades prior to 2017, Man Wah Tan @genentech.

I think there are many any reasons for this: 1) lesser pressure to publish so you can do it when you're 120% sure, usually after a project has ended or seen its orientation fundamentally altered.

Go Terry ! I agree 100% with your comments. Although I don’t have your years in academia, I found it demoralizing in academia for 8 years. I have never been happier returning to a biotech where I work with people who are happy and want to come to work - far from the dark-side.
