In the Chinese city of Xi'an, all 13 million residents have been told to stay at home because of a #coronavirus outbreak there. #China

One person from each household in Xi'an is to be allowed outside every 2 days to buy food etc. Millions of residents have been told not to leave the northern city. People need special govt permission to leave. Mass #COVID19 testing has started. Long-distance bus stations shut.

The strategy, in recent times here, has been to use highly-targeted, strict, amelioration strategies in #China. It’s been a while since a major city like Xi’an has been locked down completely.

The city-wide lockdown for 13 million residents of Xi'an came after only dozens more extra infections today (according to official figures). Following mass testing, if the infection numbers don't blow out, it could be that the city shutdown doesn't last for long?

BTW #China's officials have described the outbreak which has locked down 13 million residents in Xi'an as a Delta outbreak of #COVID19. There has been no mention of Omicron.

In #China the #COVID19 responses are mostly a local government decision it seems. The size, timing, scope of #coronavirus control measures come from regional, city or town governments. That’s why the responses have differed. However there has been cross-pollination.

Domestic flights into and out of Xi'an have now been grounded. Some train connections remain but travellers need special permission from officials to board. You need a good reason. Taxis etc also not allowed to leave the city. #China

Though this is the sixth day in a row with increased #covid infection numbers (according to official stats) the total figure is still only around 200 people over the past couple of weeks. 13 million locked down residents have already been tested twice. So shutdown not too long?
