This is a privileged take. Institutional racism has made it so works by black people, and by people of color have been ignored or passed over regardless of quality. We need diversity to produce greater work. It also assumes all art isn't informed by the artists' identity.

That is like saying "I don't see color" and as problematic.

the problem is the diversity that is NECESSARY in art, because art mirrors real life, is being overlooked for men who look just like you. this is so disappointing.

Came here to say this. Have read books set in the Deep South where every character is white to the point it stands out that the author doesn’t want to “deal with” race

Yeah, no. Standards of quality require diversity of content, and homogeneity produces warped ideas of what “quality” is. We deprive ourselves if we don’t aggressively pursue and boost diversity in all art forms.

This will be an unpopular opinion but I agree with you. You can’t be diverse just to be diverse. If the content being produced by a more diverse group of people isn’t good, then you can’t nominate it. It doesn’t matter what the medium is.

Judging what's good and what isn't good is ultimately subjective to the group that's judging. If your judges are mostly all from the same group, their biases show and negatively impact others. You can't tell me history supports that white men remove their biases when judging.
