  1. Library and archives friends I'm doing a webinar on Febriary 27th about trans and gender non-conforming inclusion in library spaces.

  2. Library administrators need to understand: Anti-transgender hate groups are *using* libraries to legitimize their project. Let's use our intellectual freedom to push back instead of capitulating.

  3. Just stumbled across this free ebook about the Transgender Archives. I haven't read it all yet, but the pictures from the collection are very good!

Libraries can and must draw a line against welcoming those who represent a threat to the humanity and existence of a part of their community. It’s all the more horrifying that this article *understands the stakes* and argues otherwise. via

I am sick of constantly seeing this regurgitated pablum day in and day out. You know what would be a great direction for library innovation? Maybe revisit some of your policies. Go wring your hands helplessly elsewhere, the rest of us are ready for change

Are there no civic leaders *anywhere* who understand the Paradox of Tolerance? No, you cannot welcome bigots and still say your space is welcoming to the public. That's the one group that's incompatible with every other group. Dump the bigots, serve the public!

  7. ...A lot of this is just sloppy writing. Who are "these groups"? The only possible antecedent from the phrasing is the critics of WoLF, but (to my knowledge) that is largely individuals. this ignores the many individual trans people who have (uselessly) begged SPL for support.

  8. I feel like I should keep up with things, so I'm going to read The Article. Is it normal to dread absorbing content from the professional organization of one's field? (, this isn't likely to make me rejoin, in case you were wondering.)

  9. Oh, and I forgot to say this because I was distracted by my horror and personal fear: STOP CALLING IT A FEMINIST GROUP. TRANSPHOBIA IS NOT FEMINISM.

I just want to tell the author that both side-ism doesn’t work when one side believes the other shouldn’t have basic human rights and shouldn’t exist.

  11. I'd been hoping for some sort of statement from on all this, even though I know better than to expect something supportive to trans folks, but this is worse than expected; it's language that is actually dangerous instead of just another cop-out. I regret reading it.

  12. I'm not sure how to wrap this up, because the end really brings home that the author doesn't see trans people as worthy of existence, let alone having a voice. I'm really horrified (again) by and for letting this go up.

  13. Oh, wow, that penultimate paragraph is something. This is a HATE GROUP. They want us to NOT EXIST. It is not the same thing as literally any of the examples listed, and the fact that the author chose them is legitimately terrifying to me.

  14. "Ideological leanings" is up there with "perspective." The determined refusal to acknowledge that this is an actual hate group indicates that the author agrees with them enough that he'd feel uncomfortable characterizing them as such. Same impression given by library leaders.

  15. "Libraries don’t endorse, sanction, promote, or otherwise advocate for the views presented in their collection or events." Oh, honey. Also, if I recall, the same group explicitly claimed library endorsement after TPL.

  16. "Public libraries...exist in an apolitical milieu." I actually laughed out loud.

  17. "But, unfortunate as it may appear, this is the only position libraries can proffer."This is obviously a ludicrous statement, but I'm stuck on "may appear." The author's willful determination to ignore the actual concerns of trans people is quite something.

  18. Oh, yes. "Disenchanted" is definitely the word for how I feel when my profession sees no problem welcoming in speakers who think I shouldn't exist. It's not utterly dehumanizing or anything; it definitely doesn't make me want to avoid public libraries (as worker or patron).

  19. A little while ago did an excellent piece on why this logic is flawed, as it cites potential harm without acknowledging the actual harm currently being done.

  20. "...the necessity of protecting controversial speech: censorship works both ways and can just as easily (and more severely) affect minority groups." If this is the argument, you should be able to call it hate speech and have the reasoning hold, but that doesn't seem to be so.
