I'm so excited to share this report with y'all. The history of Georgia public schools is one of exclusion/mistreatment of Black folks. This makes the schoolhouse the perfect location for targeted policies to represent a future where all GA students thrive.

There are a number of ways to measure the quality of a school. Here we examined how an over-reliance on standardized tests provides a false picture of school success. Lowering the number of these tests is a good step.

FYI - Governor Talmadge, who also removed Board of Regents members for the "crime" of considering integration and caused the loss of accreditation for Georgia's colleges because of his racism... has a statue outside Georgia's capitol.

Just a reminder that student transportation funding in Georgia has remained practically unchanged since Bill Clinton was president. This isn't just a Henry County problem, it's a Georgia problem.

Time for another ! 1951 - Gov. Talmadge explains the racist policy of separate but equal in Georgia public schools that had been in place for years.

It's Black History Month! I'm going to lift up some facts/dates this month from Black history, specifically around GA public education. To wit: 1868 - Georgia's Constitution of 1868 included the first requirement for public education due to Black leaders like Tunis Campbell

Finally, even though this year bus drivers and monitors could get $4.4m for a 5% raise, there's much less money for bus replacement ($20m last year, 12.5m this year). So districts will continue to make tough decisions to make sure kids can get to school.

Second, student enrollment only grew 0.3% this year, but will need $144m more... why? School districts are paid differing amounts depending on the courses that each student is in, and enrollment in programs that command more $$ has increased significantly.

First, Gov. Kemp allocated $362m to raise the base salary schedule for certified teachers by $2,000 & a $1,000 raise for (some) non-certified personnel that make <$40k. Combined w/ last years' raises, this would mean $896 million was added to public ed funding in 2 years alone!

PhD hopefuls, please consider as you make decisions about where you want to pursue your doctoral studies. Can personally attest to the great experience myself and many others are having here at UGA. I will forever be indebted to UGA and will cherish this fam forever.

Y'all. This study is incredible. It hits implicit bias, calls school report cards (ahem, CCRPI) "simplistic" and poor measures of school quality, and lays bare the fact that while everyone wants integration we're not willing to do a thing about it

One of the first questions on the proposed cuts is about data quality! That's one thing and I ran into CONSTANTLY during our research on the state's Dual Enrollment program.

Just finished the analyst panel at the policy conference. Far and away the thing that most people wanted to talk about to me afterwards dealt with this chart. Kids gotta get to school, y’all.

Watching the budget hearing. Really appreciate Chairman England's talking about "grave concerns" on cuts to Georgia's state schools and the general assembly's responsibility to serve these kids well. State schools serve deaf/blind students, among others.
