Before taking leave, I weighed the same as I did my freshman year of college. I had so internalized the survival mode required of women, PoC, WoC in academia that I hadn’t noticed my deteriorating health.

We have to stop thinking that simply acknowledging minorities’ disadvantages is enough. Telling WoC that students will undermine their authority, knowledge and expertise or will, in some cases, be hostile, does not hold perpetrators accountable.

Institutions need to do more about supporting faculty of color, junior faculty, and holding students accountable to behavior in & outside of classrooms. Diversity hiring initiatives are void, at best, without research, teaching, mentorship support.

This includes supporting grad and undergrad first gen students and students of color who turn to profs for guidance in navigate the same hostile institution.

I am proud of what I accomplished in the classroom in my first year— esp in developing relationships with students who’d previously felt unseen and isolated— but wish I’d crossed the finish line on my own terms.

To be clear, this is a critique of and suggestion to all universities as diversity initiatives are universal. I first heard of the challenges I’d face as a 1st gen prof of color in my undergrad McNair days. Convo hasn’t changed much since 2008.
