Nonsense, cannot be everyone. How happy one is will be relative to how happy the average person is. If the average happiness is 5/10 you will be depressed at 4.5 and happy at 5.5. If 'everyone' is getting more depressed so the mean is 4/10 you now need only be 4.5/10 to be happy.

What actually has happened, the average happiness has increased to something like 7/10. This makes it far harder to be happier than average (7.5/10) so people get 'depressed' and angry if they can only reach 7/10. They fall off the wagon and dye their hair pink.
