Would it be fair to at least consider that some children learn better with a healthy dose of fear and discipline mixed into their learning of morals? Not necessarily torture but a little bit of hardship rather than comfort can build character.

Applying pressure & punishment also braces them for the realities in the world around them. Half of that reality is the world "may" appeal or "may not" to their finer sensibilities, but consequences mirrored in youth of disobeying a parent, are reflected when confronted by law

Not true, especially when the lesson (reason for the discipline) is combined with the punishment. Punishment not for the sake of punishment but to reinforce its rationale and underlying moral reason.
