Samsung deprecated an API that was most likely used to fetch the SMS/MMS sqlite db from the phones in Knox's 5.5 SDK/API. "Thousands" means every phone that got the Knox update which ironically was probably pushed to phones from the Knox console.

SMS/MMS capture would have been a more difficult setup because it would not have come in the sql container and the devs would have had to map the api return to a db... They short cut it and used app.backup because it did the same thing with less work
