I half agree with this. If you lie about a nest egg your building for each other, maybe thats ok. If you lie when money is tight and the CC balances are out of control, yeah, no, thats bad.

It's not just about the money though. If you do this it's a statement that you fundamentally don't trust your partner. Do you think that *won't* manifest in other ways? What about parenting? Can you trust that they are parenting peacefully? Pick better people, have standards.
-
Listen,no marriage is perfect. I could not see myself hiding money from my partner, but,I tell you what, I wouldn’t lose my house over being honest with her. Some women are terrible with money,as some men are as well.
-
But that's what I'm trying to address. I can understand picking someone despite their faults, I can't understand picking someone who doesn't have the strength of character to discuss their weaknesses and accept the guidance of their partner. Where is the intimacy?
-
I get what your saying, and longevity in a marriage in the USA is becoming a rarity. However I have seen marriages survive with some trust issues firsthand. I hope that is not me in 20 years...
-
I think we agree that as a principle it's very bad to *aim* for accommodating dishonesty in a relationship. That's my major objection to this article. I applaud couples who work through those trust issues in any healthy way. I just hope I'm not still looking for a wife in 20 yrs.

BTW, I see you like to hike. Do the Appalachian trail. Do it, do it in Georgia this spring, say March/April. You will learn life lessons, so amazing. Go as long as you can, at least a month or more. Need not worry about black bears, they are more afraid of you.

-
Oh I'd love to one day, after I've saved up some $$$ and get out of South Africa. I have a semi-serious theory that if your relationship can survive an extended hiking trip then you've probably found the one. :P

Wrong,Stefan. Don't you know that women should do whatever they can, no matter how 'subjectively immoral' it might be to you, to make sure they are 'safe' and 'protected' and never take any risks and always win. Any collateral damage to men is not important. You need reeducation.

If you need to lie to your spouse (other than a good surprise) then your in an unhealthy relationship and you need to get out. Lying just leads to paranoia and insecurity in the long run.

Why not make it a law that women must be fully financially independent at all times to be married or have a husband?? This would ensure equality and accountability. ITs a win - win!!

A woman should never lie to a man about her bank balance. This is why I always recommend to have separate bank accounts when u get married and never have one together.
