It has no underlying value. No one's salary is backing it. If it crashes by 50% it may crash by 100%

Counter it. Name me an employer paying salaries in that currency. It got big as an exchange for illicit Chinese and Russian funds. Leaders have many ways of stopping that when they fancy it, they'll take spare cash off the gamblers first though.

I always guessed a currency is supposed to serve as a....ehm....currency. like, not wildly appreciating, not being an investment, not a speculation. just a medium of exchange.

What's the difference between buying Bitcoin directly and futures? They're both entirely based on its future price, not fundamental value today.
