Government science has the same relationship to science as government welfare has to charity.

Not an argument. Government can't touch anything with shooting it's price up and halting it's progress.

They'd have the vested interest into finding cures. Now they just force taxpayers to pay for it through government.

Is that a philosophical statement? 😉 So, philosophically speaking, do you think fusion reactor research should best be funded by private capital alone or by charity? 🧐

An interesting dichotomy, considering tax money is neither ;)

...and neither would be made available for such a project. And if private money were to fund it, unlikely as it would be, the resulting patents would be private too. - And yet such research is vital.

That's simply not true. My brother works for a company that specializes in nuclear energy. They are privately owned and their research is funded by investors, not tax dollars. Furthermore, historically, advancements in technology have been driven largely by the free market.

Indeed, it largely was. But, 'simply not true' is too strong a statement & you know it. The example of fusion research still stands. Private nuclear would not do this. Not unless they were provided public backing. A great deal of corp research was in fact done via public backing.

Tri Alpha Energy is backed by Paul Allen. General Fusion is backed by Jeff Bezos. Helion, just a few miles from my house, is backed by Peter Thiel. These are billionaire investors. Private sector is competing with, if not beating outright, the public sector at present.

And the international fusion nirvana presently being built in France is not being built by billionaires. So too have your billionaires only entered the race once the technology has been brought to its current level - by public research.

True enough. But that doesn't change the inaccuracy of your claims that private financial backing is "unlikely" and such research could only be done with public backing. The fact of the matter is that much of the current research is already privately funded and doing well.
