There were many legal immigrants who couldn't but learned the language, opened bizs & assimilated. What happened to the American culture!?
To gain U.S. citizenship you should at least be able to READ the Statue of Liberty "huddled masses" poem which is written in ENGLISH.

So what about all the German, French, Italian, Swiss, Poles, etc that wouldve been kept from coming to America over the centuries? -

Thus far every group has assimilated. If you have an issue with a particular group, say it. I may agree. But give it a name.

They've assimilated thus far because until recently they came from similar cultures and shared more or less the same religion.
