I'm guessing it's an SSD drive? SSD drives that use TLC or QLC NAND tend to have SLC buffers to speed up write speeds. It shuffles the data from SLC to TLC/QLC (which is slower in speed than SLC). If the buffer is full (during large transfers), it suddenly drops in speed.

Either that, or you've been transferring lots of large files and now it's transferring lots of smaller files which have additional seek time and other funky jazz associated with it.

Chuck Windows. Install Linux. I suggest Fedora.

I like Linux Mint. If you create videos you probably need dual boot with Windows or a Mac/hackintosh. Video editing on Linux is a bit hit and miss. The more people switch to Linux the more companies will be forced to make applications for it and support it.

Ah, yes, overpay and make it much harder to do self upgrades. Build your own Windows and dual boot with Mac OS if you must.
