In my family learning history has always been an important thing. So has eating dinner together and turning off the TV/whatever to talk. When I was a kid I didn't get it, but now I realize maintaining the family's internal culture is the only way the deeper lessons are conveyed.

No sure of your connection Stefan, but the people worrying about Y2K were younger than those worrying about the cold war and the nuclear threat. I'm from New Zealand and even we were worried about the nuclear threat.
