Well you nailed the character basics. The Joker is a rejection of the hero, of optimism and to some degree life itself.

Isn't that kind of the point, though? Like, seeing a "Nietzschean/nihilistic" viewpoint told through a tragic or at least not positive depiction can be viewed as a warning of the dangers of falling into that worldview? I haven't seen it yet, but it's not saying he's a good guy.
