In general, women fail to understand the principle of free speech, because women use words as weapons, to gossip and undermine and harm people. Men fight with fists, so men need to control violence. Women fight with words, so women need to control language.https://twitter.com/PrisonPlanet/status/1178977819889750018 …

Stefan, I like you but not everything is a man woman thing. Plenty of men have restricted speech or attempted to. Don’t be silly.

I am a free speech absolutist. But I realize most of the videos I watch are 90% male audiences. I don’t understand the psychology behind it, but im usually cracking jokes and talking politics with the guys, I cant do the cackling hens thing.

@ImHardcory might know. Is there a gender difference in support for free speech, and if so why?

I just quickly analyzed my 'support for censorship' data by gender, and indeed, yes, women consistently are more supportive of censorship than men. The questions/topics these data correspond to are described in this paper: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/333677484_The_Ideology_of_Censorship …pic.twitter.com/aGFKPRRPc6

How about controlling for liberalism? I’m surprised to see you add data to (implicitly) support Moly’s evo psych claim without even a caution that it’s likely not evolutionary. Through most of history (vs last decade), who do we think have had more power to restrict free speech?

Hi @awilson_WLU! Controlling for liberalism does not affect the effect size for gender at all across any of the five topics, so likely not an ideology effect! Wouldn't be surprised if it was just something like empathy (though libs are also more empathic) or politeness.

Thanks @ImHardcory! Are those t-tests collapsed across both scenario versions (eg men better/women better leaders)? I’d interpret it differently if w show the effect across the board vs for low status groups. Also notable: both m and w means are below midpoint (anti censorship).

Just checked for interactions and actually, women are more supportive of censorship for every topic and every condition *except* for the "women evolved to be better leaders than men" condition for the Leadership topic. Thanks for these analyses suggestions :) Very interesting!pic.twitter.com/Kxf6joCihd
