“Poor” is a relevant term. I was never hungry as a kid but I didn’t get the coolest clothes - I thought then I was poor.

I think raising your children with less makes them value things more when they get them. But if your mom was a monster, the shortcomings (or overabundance) of a caregiver's personality would supersede whatever material thing you're lacking.
