That's likely his inner child speaking. As it probably was when commenting on JP's situation by pointing out that he's been a victim of cancer himself, and implying his family dealt with that better than JP has managed to do with his wife's cancer/diagnosis.

Not compassion but real empathy. The ability to feel/understand the emotions of others. Your ability to manage anxiety is different if you are in danger or someone else you care is in danger. It change with your personality.
