Blackface Morris dancing tradition is a big part of the folk heritage of England dated to a time when dancers Didn't want the local Squire to know they were going around villages and making money, because "he'd have put the rent up". So they blacked up their faces as a disguise.

There's a certain blackface tradition that originated there, but not all skin-darkening events came from that. E.g. medieval morris dancing, Peter Sellars in The Party, Robert Downey jr in Tropic Thunder.
