And also to let everyone know who's the aggressor. So they can support you on your retaliation.

It's an allusion to Lamentation 3, involving a fellow in captivity in an occupied city. It matches the condition of Jerusalem in Jesus' time, and refers to not uselessly resisting an abusive authority figure in everyday life. Not about war or self-defense.pic.twitter.com/0G5EQri8Sk

A common view on it. Heard it a few times. But just doesn’t fit, I think, with the context of the verse.pic.twitter.com/AMM5Akb4cW

Not in context. This is definitely one of Jesus’ “hard sayings.“ The rest of the passage says basically give to anyone who asks and expect nothing in return. It is a re-prioritizing of others before self, because we will always take care of self naturally. Love your enemies.

If the point is "don't resist evil, no matter what" then I'd have to say theres something wrong either with the scripture, the understanding of it, or failing those, God. I hope it's one of the first two.
-
Well the point of the bible is that we always try to be God but are not. One of those ways is through seeking our own vengeance against wrongdoers, and only loving those who treat us well. And no, we can’t do it 100% the other way, hence the need for salvation
-
I can accept that. And I can agree that seeking vengeance isn't righteous, but there are other reasons to resist evil doers.

Indeed!

Jesus didn't allow himself to be crucified because he was waiting for somebody to realize they got the wrong guy.

I continue to be puzzled, Stefan. Having recognized that the greatest civilizations have as their foundation Christ, you have yet to acknowledge that the "death of God" in the heart of Western people has rapidly resulted in our current decline.

While I reject the notion that western countries are "God's chosen people," I do see ominous parallels between the fall of ancient Israel/Judah and the fall of the West. Fall of Christianity in the West precedes the social and political collapse.

Culturally, slapping someone on the right cheek in those days was an insult. Most people are right handed so why would they use their left hand to slap someone on their right cheek? They of course used their right back hand. Turning the other cheek is to say I’m not insulted.
