"I was practically forced by circumstances" and "I was literally forced onto the ships" are not even remotely the same

They still had options when you compare them to slaves. And even once they arrived, they got paid for their labor.

My ancestors didn’t have brutal tyrannies in Ireland-they had the famine and better possibilities here-they came by choice or necessity but still their decision

I was always curious how many black immigrants were brought to this country as slaves and how many came here voluntarily as refugees from oppressive regimes or as economic immigrants? Anybody knows?

Yeah because my fore-fathers (and mothers) decided that war and genocide weren’t going to work out for their future. So it was either leave or die. Or die quicker...

Decided.

Yeah but you know as well as I do when people make their own decision they like it a lot more than when it is made for them, even if it was the best thing for them.

Preach. Irish famine as an example. I was just at the famine museum in Johnstown Castle in Wexford. Chilling.

Also impressive, those fleeing Europe after the failed revolutions of 1848 came to the US where they then helped the Union fight against the confederate states and slavery, including about 200,000 German-born soldiers ultimately forming about 10% of the North’s entire forces.

I would say our Founder wrote the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution with the First Ten Amendments, was because of the lessons they learned from the tyranny of the home countries. They knew people in govt tend to abuse the power, and do so in the name of govt.

My great great grandmother went to the US from Iceland in 1883 and left behind a 9 year old son. She went all the way to Seattle and never returned to her home country. Like so many others fleeing poverty.

Earliest Lewis I found in my tree was sentenced 7 years transport for stealing a piece of cotton, course the story handed down was about how bold it was for a man in his 50s to uproot the whole family & travel across the Atlantic. His son or grandson became justice of the peace.

Mostly they fled to get work. They were used like slaves here. Actually worse, as indentured servants wrote about the horrors they lived through.
