1. Good bosses are rare, so you can't base anything off of them. 2. Even good bosses can't give you raises they can't afford. 3. Most, if not all, companies have a long list of potential employees ready to replace you.

You are correct. And if they can't increase your wages, they will make exceptions for time off, WFH, etc. for you. I have never asked for a raise. I have always been treated fairly and been given generous raises or extremely generous accommodations.

No a good boss will have someone always at the ready
-
Then why don’t they just hire that guy and can the malcontent?
-
Because he's not a malcontent until he starts haggling. Because there's usually a cost attached to replacing someone.

-
Seems like a waste of resources on the boss’s part to keep people on the line that he’s not actually offering a job to. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

People have the skill to negotiate. Then there's the hard nosed creeps who'll say anything to win.

Agreed but not all people have good bosses, also some bosses are so far removed from the day to day operations there is no contact.

I haven't seen that yet so far. They only ever offer the raise when I'm putting in a two-three week notice, at which point I dont really care anymore.

A bad boss will give you a raise to stop you from leaving if you are high performance employee. Bad bosses usually rely on them.

Again why don't you ask what Hong Konger in Street will say about the most common issue. Its being underpaid in a city that is too expensive. I guarantee this is the no 1 issue followed by no2 which is democracy at stake.

This is to business what "flat earth " is to geography. Grown-ups know this is foolishness.

No, most managers don't have that authority in corporate America.
-
A few years ago the manager of a local Dollar General was so ready to hire me we were discussing pay and hours, but then a computer told her she couldn't hire me.
