Sigh. No. The US government forced banks to lend to blacks and Hispanics. That’s why the government never prosecuted the banks. Their legal defence would be to point out how they were forced. Far easier to just blame “deregulation” and “capitalism.”https://twitter.com/irish4ever4/status/1170054290930569217 …

correct. a lender can't "take advantage of you" by offering you a loan you can never pay back. they would go out of business doing that. unless, of course, the government incentivized / required them to do so, with the guaranty that they would be bailed out

This is it. Don't make it a race issue. Credit portfolios are race blind. I don't recall ever declaring my race when getting my mortgage

The Government's CRA (Community Reinvestment Act) FORCED Banks to make these BAD loans. The CRA is STILL enforced.

"Forced" might be a stretch. All participants in process, right down to loan origination, embraced it enthusiastically. I knew wealthy hispanic loan originators in Paterson NJ that customers trusted because they "spoke their language". These customers got taken to the cleaners

I would argue that the people responsible are the ones who took mortgages they couldn't afford, the government helped make it happen but at the end of the day people should be responsible for their own debts.
