I've always hated wearing ties. They're uncomfortable around the neck. Noose is an appropriate analogy.

Everytime i've interviewed for a job, i've always been told "Wear a tie!" I went against the grain and didn't wear a tie and still got the job. However, a tie does signal conformity, it signals to the interviewer that you are willing to do whatever it takes regardless

I've read, not sure how accurate, that it was actually a sign of being poor. Back in the day, men wore a tie to hide their low quality shirt buttons.

In all seriousness, shirts for the longest time were understood as underwear. You don't show underwear. Thus while you wear jacket, and have bit of shirt exposed, you cover it.
