Gay men took over fashion, beauty, & most other industries normally thought of as female centered. Most mainstream products & ads have passed through their filter, not women’s.

But could it be why the adage "I buy it for the articles" came about?

It's the brain. The imagination.

That's not what the quote means. The things that turn you on don't need to be, in itself, visual. I think it comes from an academic who read steaming hot stories to their students to prove the point. No withstanding the fact that visuals still are a turn on.
