Of course naturally occurring differences in amounts of chemicals exist, causing differences in feelings. I'm sure you accept differences in levels of testosterone and levels of oestrogen and their effects?

testing for serotonin would help you identify a tumor or cancer, but not depression and anxiety.

And then there's people with thyroid problems. Their moods can dramatically change with the introduction of drugs

Out genetics differ...so our levels proteins differ. So our own hormone levels may differ. This has an effect on how we respond differently to similar stimuli. Flight or flight another example of differences in how we react. Take anything: violence, happiness, sadness.

Anxiety is our brains way of warning us that we need to change something about our life. It usually takes about half a dozen questions to figure out what they change needs to be. We can deal with the root causes of anxiety or take drugs to numb the warning signs.

I don’t know the mechanism but I know some SSRI’s do continue to lessen anxiety even after one stops taking them
