Stefan, when historically have Christians “resisted political power?”
-
Not just to merely "resist" but to focus on the world that is to come, not on this fallen, temporal (political) one. John 15: 18 - 20 Romans 12: 2
-
Okay so Jerry Falwell was just not a person then, or mike pence And the crusades didn’t happen either then, huh
-
^ Meaning what exactly???
-
Jerry Falwell was a Christian who used his platform to wield massive political power Mike Pence uses his platform as VP to elevate Christian conservatism The crusades were a series of wars that fell along religious lines There are more examples but Stefan’s full of it
-
I still don't get what you're trying to harp at? Do you deny the reality of the struggle/conflict of ideas and values that happens in this world? Is the pursuit of an "ideal" invalidated/negated by scant examples similar to what you mentioned??
#HonestQuestion -
What I'm saying is that I think it's pretty ahistorical to say that Christians resist political power when so much of American and European history has been driven or justified, in part, on religious grounds Like, what even is "christendom" if it isn't tied to christian power
-
We're talking past each other. I'm not saying you're wrong in some points but the Christian ideal has and always been so, regardless of who took advantage of it for worldly pursuits. Jesus' teachings were about the world to come/heaven. Free will decides.

I've been listening to your talks for many years now, and one of your most interesting evolutions has been on the subject of religion. Your willingness to update your theories with new facts is a huge part of why I pay attention when you speak. Thank you.

Christianity recognizes the omnipresence of human evil. That is why Christians resist political power. Socialists and communists are that evil and want power above all That is why they expand political power. *** Fixed it for you. ***

Human beings are inherently evil and have to learn how to do good. Left to their own inclinations evil will usually prevail.

Christians also recognize there is a dichotomy between the “Kingdom of God” and “Kingdom of the World.” E.g. the “principalities & powers” who coerce are distinct from the cruciform God who woos. Thats why Christ rejected political/govnt power despite his audience begging for it
-
(While true that post-Constantine Christians tried to force coercive/agape power together... and succeeded for a long time... there was always the emergent thread. Anabaptists were most in tune with it, I believe)

Are you familiar with conservative evangelicals? I have not noticed them resisting political power.
