I've criticized the Galt monalogue before, but atlas shrugged was a masterpiece. If you take: Anthem (easy read) and Fountainhead (harder read) and then Atlas Shrugged (a slog) You get a complete 'philosophy of self.'
No, it was immensely powerful, once you recall that the characters are not designed to be realistic; they are manifestations of philosophical beliefs.
