        Ovadia was a prominent character of a very unique and Israel specific version of identity politics. He was an "advocate" for non-European Israeli Jews claiming no less that they are the "real" Jews and the real chosen ones. So guess who showed up at his funeral in masses.

        Because he was popular among his sect. Same reason lots of people attended Jerry Falwell's funeral. He was basically the Sephardic ultraorthodox Jerry Falwell - a religious bigot with political ambitions.
