I was a “disaffected teen with a terrible life.” Literature literally saved me.https://twitter.com/BDSixsmith/status/1163169274325798913 …

The implication of these claims is that either students or teachers are so titanically dumb they are unable to realise how stories can be "relevant" beyond the material conditions of their time. pic.twitter.com/nlljBfv90s

The only real reason students ever find Shakespeare or Dickens boring is when those teaching them are bored of teaching and teach in a boring manner. Teachers are zombies teaching our kids to be zombies bored by anything other than dramatic social media.

Well, to be fair the stories can be quite boring, and forcing students to read it against their will certainly is not going to make it any more exciting.

If you find them boring, that is unfortunate for you. As for forcing the students to read them against their will, I guess perhaps they shouldn't be forced to go to any school, or to read or write. Maybe they should just be forced to read what the media writes.

Humans are naturally curious forcing someone to do something is only going to damage that natural curiosity and like I said before will only serve to discourage students from reading similar literature.

Guess I should have never stuck on purpose a fork & knife in my kids' hands. Never purposefully grabbed a hand & stuck them on a toilet, maybe they might have smeared poop in such an artful way. Never got them to read great books 1st, instead of a smartphone google babysitter.

Shakespeare is beyond relevant. You dont have to like his every word, but just look up all the words, phrases, and storylines we have that originate from his work. Lion King is Hamlet.

I note as well the assumption that students should not study anything they "do not want to." Apparently, education must be restricted to what teens already relish. No growth there.

It’s not the material that bores them, it’s the lack of context and application that makes or appear irrelevant. Bad teachers deter students from feeling inspired about the great work their ancestors passed down to them.

When I was in school back in the late 60's early 70's we went through Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'West Side Story' to study how they were alike. Do they no longer do that in school these days?

Same here. The worst period for me was when I stopped reading literature and read (spiritual) self-help books instead at the advise of people I later realised were miserable AF. Got so confused and insecure. Even well written fantasy/sci-fi is preferable to most of that bunk.

Which students and which stories? One-size-fits-all is a big problem. And treating boys and girls as though they are the same is a big mistake, IMO. I read Treasure Island in my thirties. Great story. I felt a terrible pain, though, realizing it had been kept from me as a boy.
