Every single historical civilization had slaves/serfs. The modern world only became possible when slavery was largely ended. Slavery was similar to communism, in that it stripped economic motivation for efficiency and profit. (Also evil of course) Let the past be the past.

You’re making sweeping statements that sacrifice accuracy. Slavery was an intrinsic part of the industrial revolution. Also, capitalism is only efficient in regards to what’s marketable. It’s a highly wasteful and inefficient system as it creates unnecessary markets on a whim.

The ancient Greeks had the steam engine but didn't use it, partly because slaves already did the manual labor. Without slavery (and entrepreneurs), the industrial revolution would have begun then already. Imagine where would be today.

Already said and refuted. What the ancients had was an interesting toy. Not what started the industrial revolution.

You are missing it. They are saying if there wasn't slavery then there would have been a reason for invitations and maybe it would have been developed into a tool instead of staying a toy.

Which is a nonsense claim. The principal incentive that motivates inventors has always been intellectual curiosity. It was with the ancients, and is with the moderns.

If that were true, it would mean the ancient Greeks weren't curious – which they were. It is big incentive to be sure, but not as primary if you consider the other factors mentioned.

They were curious. They just didn't invent the working steam engine that were invented much later, and probably required other advances to come into existence.

Anyway, the first steam engine wasn't really used to do what manual labour could do, but to do what it couldn't. And hence the need was the same regardless of whether the labour was slaves or not.

The modern world became possible on the backs of mass free labor.

slavery was largely ended when cheap energy and tech became available, making the modern world possible. the price of going green - eliminating that cheap energy (carbon fuels, nuclear) - might be a return to slavery.

And slavery incentivized perpetual war and conquest as much as or maybe more than the desire for land & treasure. Slaves were as much wealth as gold - Gold bought slaves more often than not - Slaves were how the wealthy maintained the wealth that is land.https://twitter.com/StefanMolyneux/status/1163125460554932226?s=19 …
