Properly raising a child is a full time job. Women can work FT, and raise kids, but one or the other is going to fall short of well-done.
-
In addition to the fact that this isn’t necessarily true, this also isn’t a women’s issue. It’s a family issue. Yet another reason to support universal day care.
-
I agree that it is a family issue. I also believe men can be excellent stay at home dads. But I dont believe raising a child and working FT with the kid in daycare from infancy gives a kid the best possible outcome. My point stands.
-
Any data to support this? Genuinely curious. From my perspective, I would think this depends largely on how one defines things like “falling short” and “best possible outcome”
-
Always have to define variables... hard to do in a few sentences. Yes there is data.
-
I’m aware of several studies which suggest the EXACT opposite of what you say. E.g. Children who attend preschool clearly outperform students who haven’t.
-
OK. Me too. Now compare preschool vs. staying at home with a FT parent along other variables besides academic performance. My kids went to preschool-- I can anecdotally concur. But I also didn't work while they were small.
-
Exactly. That’s the type of study I haven’t seen. If you have, do share

Agree. There’s no way I could have done all that and actually raise my children the traditional way I wanted. I had to sacrifice my career. It was 100% worth every moment

Yeah, there is ultimately no such thing as multitasking. You're just trading off time, from one thing to the other.

Even 40 years ago all the things I did not want my kids to do, I did over kids houses where parents were at work. Early evenings all day summer, etc.

Stefan, keep opening eyes... I fear it is too late, the most recent batches of college grads have ZERO interest in families. All self-interested. Want to travel and NOT be tied down. Being a Good Parent is hard work. Respect to ALL of them! Full of sacrifice (esp. sleep)!

I think he means not all women are doing those things at that level. Which all of them aren't. Some are. Many do raise children and work. Men too, men do raise their children and work. A good father that teaches maturity and reason and skills to a son or daughter is a great man.

Stefan, you are resorting to generalities that belittle your points & argument. A single parent for many years, your disbelief in individual abilities is simply a generality that is indefensible. This world is difficult and I'm sure single parenthood for women is more difficult.
