People rarely do anything consciously - they almost always run on auto pilot based on instincts. The actions are going to be either environment or instinct. Instinct is mating, environment is largely caused by instinct overtime building culture. YOU likely didn't choose anything

Probably a lot more then fifty years. I suspect mammoth hunters heard it when they was about to set out for a hunt, or maybe the set out for a hunt to get away for it for a while and the meat and fur was just a bonus.
