What powers the electrolysis to separate the hydrogen and oxygen from water??? At the moment, mostly fossil fuels. You might as well burn them directly inside the engine.

They’re more efficient to burn at modern power plants. Also, grid power tech is decided on nearly a per plant basis, so grid level incremental and major changes are pretty easy to make and efficiency improvements are instantly transmitted to electric motor driven vehicles

That would take data to demonstrate. My intuition tells me the direct kinetic impact of gasoline explosion on a piston transmitted mechanically to the wheels is most efficient. Transmission lines, batteries and electric motors lose a lot.

To be clear, I mean that the data strongly contradicts your intuitions and suggests that EV’s are more efficient on nearly any energy mix.
