The only difference between socialism and communism is that socialism is just hostile to faith. Communists burn the religious like they're a viral threat. Which they are.

Most of the world's leading scientists are atheists are they not?

Being a scientist is a lifestyle choice, not a product of intelligence. Theists are more likely to be involved in humanitarian pursuits, raising larger families, and involved in church service than atheists are. Everything's a tradeoff.

OR when you study science you rely on proof. When you're trying to prove there's a god, you tend to struggle.

Brian, I'm not sure if you were trying to give further evidence for my point, but it would work just as much in the opposite direction. There's no strong correlation between pursuing difficult questions and level of intelligence. My social reason is at least observable.
