Chu was born and reared in Ireland, and identifies as Irish, which I think is a good thing. Nation states have to be capable of taking in new people and allowing them to be part of the culture. China being a bit different as a civilisation state as opposed to a nation state
-
Im pretty against the idea that citizenship = national identity but people who are born here, raised here, and identify as Irish with Irish cultural norms and understanding of Irish history? That should be the goal and expectation

Spot on. The inverse of this is blaming recently arrived refugees into Australia from Sudan as being immediately complicit in any wrong doings against aboriginal people 220 years ago.

Question here. If we assume shes genuine, isnt the use of we better? It implies she has assimilated. Of course. This is assuming her being genuine.
-
Nope. She says “we” Irish love mass immigration, and “we” Irish need not be scared of it. Suggesting the Irish should just accept the biggest threat to their culture in history, is not the sign of assimilation.
-
I completely agree with you. But I'm trying to understand, is this a catch 22? If she says we, shes either subversive or assimilated. If she says I, shes eithet unassimilated or honest, etc. I'm just curious whay the correct term is here.
-
I get you, and honestly it’s tricky. But if she was not purposely trying to subvert the country by trying to change the definition of Irish ethnicity & promoting multiculturalism, they’d be no problem with her assimilating into Irish culture.

So...would I be wrong [unreasonable] for speaking proudly about the American Revolution — saying “we” kicked Britain’s arse — even if my genetic ancestors weren’t here yet?

I was born in Ireland and am a direct descendant of the O'Rourkes of Breiffne. My ancestors were slaughtered by YOUR Norman ancestors when they invaded Gaelic Ireland 900yrs ago. Is it okay for ME to say THAT Monsieur Molyneaux? Hazel Chu is more Irish than you never were.
-
Why not just be honest about it and admit that what they are trying to say is ‘Only white people can be Irish.’
