Its not about the money. Some things are costly, but worth it because of the end-goal. Like having kids. And preserving the planet.

The fact entrepreneurs haven't found a solution is because either there is no demand or up until now they haven't been creative enough. The demand is there.

I never bought into recycling. Always struck me as environmental virtue signaling that barely makes a difference while significantly complicating my life. I’ll pass.

If they paid to pick it up that would be less efficient by definition. The whole point is to maximize resources. 30 years, huh?

I note the recycling that -is- efficient they do just that. Have a car to scrap? That metal's worth the gas and labor.

It is effective in societies that prioritize it.

Here in Korea, it used to be extremely common for people to gather all manner of recycling because a profit was turned. But ever since China no longer accepts imports of waste paper for recycling, the value of the recyclable paper/cardboard has gone off a cliff.
-
I am not actually sure what the price is now, and if the crisis is persisting, but for a while there was nobody even gathering recyclable paper/cardboard. Something has been done to change the situation again.
-
So it is kind of interesting because there is a point at which recycling is profitable, but things can change quickly to make it not profitable. I also wonder if the Chinese importing recyclable paper was ever actually profitable for them, or if govt subsidies/corruption made it
-
profitable for the people who engaged in it but a net loss for society in reality.
