Untrue. The drive for education was always there independent of government. Literacy was driven in part by work requirements.

I remember reading years ago the USA had the highest % of public education in Western Civilization. All controlled by Govt and Teachers Unions. All schools teaching Govt mandated dogma.

Beg to differ. Public education, since it's inception in Bismark's Germany, was designed as a governmental tool of assimilation into a national identity. That worked fine - until government surrendered control to teachers' unions and left-wing Boards of Education in the 1960's/
