Disheartening to see people speak so lightly about childhood abuse. I gave my abusive dad a choice: stop the verbal abuse or never see me or his grandkids. He chose to stop and we've all been happier for it. Too bad he didn't make that choice when I was a kid.

If you have abusive parents - walk away for a season. Forgiveness is the best sign you've recovered from the abuse. When you've forgiven they can't hurt you anymore, and you know how to protect yourself without causing more damage to yourself or them.

My family is so toxic. My mom passed away over a year ago from a rare uterine cancer at age 59. My dad was the ringleader of abuse but recently several siblings have been the worst abusers. He is still toxic because he refuses to address any of the abuse, past or present.

Over 5 years of therapy from an emotionally abusive parent. She still is, my boundary for repairing is we both go to counseling.. she refuses for over 10 years. That 5 years included mourning a loss (death) of a parent that is among the living.

One also has to prepare to forgive them later or they will not be happy. Some people can suppress childhood trauma for a lifetime by using drugs alcohol and other distractions. And because these children will associate love with abuse they need to be wary when picking a partner.

Stay off the antidepressants. They can cause insanity!
