Please point me in to Atwood’s explanation. I read the book when it was originally published & it traumatised me. I lived through the overthrow of Shah of Iran but don’t remember any of this (except maybe the clothing). I’d be interested to know what facts the book was based on.

She did. The Handmaid's Tale was a rebuke to Westerners who saw oppression in the Middle East and said "but it's their culture, we mustn't impose our imperialistic values" etc. The frame story has European/Asian academics saying just that when it happens to American women.
