The reason why the west rose quickly to industrial, and academic power has always been a bit of a mystery to me. Why not the rest of the world? Perhaps

Pretty sure what we now call India was in fact divided into little warring kingdoms ruled by rajahs, sultans, etc before the British arrived. It was a land ruled by warring religious tensions between Hindu's and Muslims along with tension found within each of those religions.
