If India was so wealthy when the Europeans came, why didn’t they hire an army to resist the colonizers?

The British exploited the societal rifts and widened them. A trick that is still used today.

They didn't EXPLOIT societal rifts, they manufactured them.

I’m no expert on Indian history but it’s hard to believe that societal rifts were manufactured from whole cloth by the British without preexisting factionalism. History is littered with successful conquerors widening societal rifts.

They exploited ruling king's hunger for power. Mughal empire was nearly dead and there were thousands of claimant to the court of Delhi. British were just lucky they came at a time like that.

Hilarious to think British came with an army n conquered. Were irrelevant till battle of Plassey 1757 where they promised Mir Jaffer the throne of Bengal..he defected with entire 50,000 army...British were 3000.

The corporation didn't need to bring an army, they simply employed the locals, poverty makes people eager to murder for a small wage, hence waging war.

Is that how developed nations build their army..by keeping certain sections poor so they join army?

So why in a bleeding moon did the Europeans keep on looking for a way to India, name every one else Indian along the long, round route, and then stick around for centuries? Hmm! 🤔🙏World is frequently funny to let foolishly put questions propagate. Examples abound even now.

Because colonizers did not come in war. They came as traders and Indians accepted them with hospitality and kindness . We did not know how sly and deceitful these new guests could be.
