The caste system was exacerbated under the raj and instantiated in law as was the Muslim Hindu divide with deliberate policys such as the fostering of the fear of Hindu domination.

There was never a Hindu Muslim unity...impossible if one believes the other is just a tool to get to heaven by killing. British only gave a name and voice to the divide. Muslims were the ruling class in the North. Hence they fought British.

Highly unlikely happened due to the fact that weapons at the time would never had allowed such ferocity. Besides humanity does evolve with time.
