IQ tests are simply tests of the ability to recognize patterns and make predictions based on that ability. Math is my worst subject, but I still hit high enough on the IQ test that MENSA invites me to pay for a membership.

Let's also not forget the amount of high ranked silicon valley professionals that are of Indian origin, and how indian-american children dominate the spelling bee. Of course measuring IQ in a 3rd world slum with poor nutrition and education will result in low scores.

Sigh, however the skills used to solve complex mathematical problems (analysis, reasoning logic) are what an iq test measures. Therefore a culture that encourages mathematics will be more practiced in these skills. It's not that hard to get...

They might not measure math through say...calculus or algebra...but pattern recognition is definitely intrinsic to math... I'd argue pattern recognitin is even the foundation of math....it's absolutely intrinsic to math tho- lol I'll die on that hill.

A Cambridge professor once said in an interview with the BBC, you can gage a person’s mathematical ability by how much they can fit into the back of a car.

My IQ is off the charts and I never learned calculus. I can't do an integral to save my life. My physicist pal tells me I should, because differentials are incredibly useful.

Hi Stef, I've always been under the impression that IQ and mathematical aptitude are strongly correlated. Could it be possible that a person who is brilliant at mathematics could have a low IQ , or conversely.
-
It is entirely possible. IQ tests are centered around general pattern recognition and ability to predict future patterns based on that recognition. A person with a high IQ can have at least one subject they’re not so good in. 1/2
-
Conversely a person with low IQ could show excellent performance in a single subject. Natural talent is a factor; as well as the individuals focus. 2/2
-
Hi Don...thanks for answering me...I have always been confused about this. I am a mathematician. I am pretty sure that mathematical talent is mainly genetic, however it has to be taught and trained to be effective.

Sigh. IQ tests do not contain math questions. Nor are they timed.https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/worlds-shortest-iq-test-only-18510848 …

Ive done an IQ test with a psychologist two years ago or so. It was timed and yes it had math questions.

Iq is neither a test of English, grammar, maths etc etc it is merely a test of analytical reasoning which determines true human intelligence

It's amazing how many people don't know what IQ tests even measure. Makes me wonder if they've ever seen a real one.

Anyone that says an IQ test is culturally biased has never taken, nor even looked at, an IQ test.
