A THIRD of children being dragged across the border illegally are not even related to their “parents.” They are kidnapped, bought, threatened, trafficked - who knows? A detention center is by FAR the safest place for them.

HK used to have refugee camps for thousands of Vietnam refugees. Many after investigation moved to US and Canada. I think the case is similar.

A lot of the refugee kids who are accompanied by unrelated adults are orphans or their parents couldn't afford to pay for them all to go. So they send the child so they could have a future away from the danger they're escaping. Plenty of peer reviewed papers on this.
