They like to take drugs. Not all people have a terrible childhood or experience. I saw it all growing up.

We seek relief from our inner pain in one way or another - drugs, money, fame, power, sex, success, relationships. Only one thing can fill that emptiness

Or lack of meaning

Most drug abuse is a side effect of other issues (Depression, Anxiety, Finances, Broken Homes). If we can fix the underlying issues we can make a huge dent in drug addiction.

I used weed and alcohol heavily for practically my entire adult life. It was about abuse so far as learned behaivor is abusive. The real problem was not wanting to upset things by speaking truths. Far easier to dumb myself down. 561 days no alcohol 196 days completely sober

I have always thought this

My sister-in-law was over medicated by her doctor and died.

Medicating a perceived abusive childhood.
