This was the faux moral supremacy that was “community based” whether or not it was in the best interest of the patient or community. Much tragedy has befallen both due to political interference.

Many patients from closed mental institutions ended up on the street, homeless and destitute. The timing of closed facilities matches with the emergence of a level of street population that scarcely existed when I was growing up in the 60's & 70's.

Problem with the free-marketeer idea is that if mental hospitals were profitable they would still exist in today's climate like private prisons. They aren't profitable at all and come with all kinds of lawsuit potential. They are something that should be funded by government.

“Cruel to be kind” seems to be the motto of the mental health profession by shutting down institutions that, while by no means perfect, afforded a better life than homelessness and jail. And the patients and society suffers, while some psychiatrists get rich.

It's worse than that. SJW'ish APA essentially sets the parameters for how one obtains a degree in psych while each new DSM they devise seems designed specifically to make further mockery of the diagnosis process itself with help no doubt from big pharma.https://www.cchrint.org/issues/the-corrupt-alliance-of-the-psychiatric-pharmaceutical-industry/ …
