I was also pretty upset when I read the headline too, then I read the article. That child's death is the direct result of the mother's actions. But I'm not sure the ruling is the correct one.

Manslaughter is generally defined is doing something reckless that could reasonably be expected to endanger life and which results in death. If you intend to kill it gets upgraded to a murder charge. Drunk drivers, for instance, are charged with manslaughter.

They are arguing she did something stupid and got a person killed. That person just happened to be in her womb. Same thing if a person attacked her and caused the baby to die - they would be charged manslaughter for killing the baby and aggravated assault for attacking her.
