I’ve spent the majority of my life helping people. Real charity is about the most complicated relationship in society. You want to help, but not subsidize bad decisions. Sympathy versus tough love. Governments CANNOT handle this complexity. “Help” just becomes vote-buying.

AMEN! In public health, people are the product. In charity, service is the product. Buying votes by promising help is about power, not charity.

Absolute compassion is seeing the situation as it is, directly and thoroughly. If you have to be tough, you just do it. Idiot compassion contains a sort of opium - constantly trying to be good and kind. Absolute compassion is more literal, more discriminating and more definitive.

I feel like the devils advocate position here would argue that the subsidized aid couldn't be a "bad decision" since it should, in theory, reflect the needs of the masses in a democracy. It's those darn capitalists buying our politicians that prevent funding going to "good" aid

Being a “tough love” minded person myself, you are correct. Simply giving doesn’t better the situation for the person, people involved. They must become active participants so they can succeed on their own.

There is nothing virtuous about coercing others, by way of government mandate, to do “charity.” Real charity is done voluntarily with no ulterior motives and doesn’t care for public recognition.

A society where welfare and redistributive measures are absent is one where the poor are subject to the arbitrary whim of wealthy overlords who might deign to throw a few crumbs off the table that the abject poor might survive. It would make society one great den of exploitation.
